Layout of Tampico
Tampico sits on a low neck of land between the Río Pánuco to the south, the Laguna del Chairel to the west and the Laguna del Carpintero in the middle of the city. The centro histórico is two adjoining squares. Plaza de Armas carries the cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the municipal palace; one block south, Plaza de la Libertad is the core of the Zona Luz, the restored quarter where the oil money of the 1900s and 1920s built ranks of galleried buildings with imported ironwork. The port wharves run along the river bank immediately south of it, which is why the old city faces the water rather than the sea.
Avenida Hidalgo is the main axis north out of the centre through the newer commercial districts toward the airport; Boulevard Adolfo López Mateos crosses it and carries traffic east into Ciudad Madero. The Laguna del Carpintero, ringed by a park with a pedestrian bridge, holds a resident crocodile population inside the city limits. Ciudad Madero adjoins Tampico on the east with the Francisco I. Madero refinery and Playa Miramar; Altamira lies 30 km north with the industrial port. Highway 180 crosses the Pánuco to Veracruz on the Puente Tampico, a cable-stayed bridge about 1,540 m long opened in 1988 and the landmark visible from most of the city. General Francisco Javier Mina International Airport (TAM) is about 10 km north of the Plaza de Armas, and the central de autobuses is in the same northern belt near the Highway 80 and 180 junction. Tampico is the point where the coastal Highway 180, the Highway 80 link inland to Ciudad Valles and Highway 70 across to San Luis Potosí all meet. Nothing large is close: the nearest cities of any size are three hours away in every direction.

The Pánuco, the oil field and the Huasteca
The Pánuco is the reason the city exists. It drains a basin of about 96,000 km² that reaches back into the Valley of Mexico and the eastern Sierra Madre, and it is one of the largest Mexican rivers by discharge — see the rivers map. A Spanish villa stood here from 1554 until pirates burned it in 1683; the site lay empty for 140 years and the modern city dates from its refounding in 1823. Its growth came with oil. The Ébano wells of 1904, then the Faja de Oro gushers inland at Potrero del Llano and Cerro Azul between 1910 and 1916, made Tampico the export terminal for a field so productive that by 1921 Mexico was the second-largest oil producer in the world. Refining still anchors the economy: the Madero refinery is one of six Pemex plants in the country, and Altamira's port handles the petrochemical trade.
The municipality itself counted 297,554 people in 2020, Ciudad Madero 197,216 and Altamira 262,238; together with Pueblo Viejo and Pánuco across the river in Veracruz the conurbation comes to roughly 950,000, the second-largest on the Mexican Gulf coast after Veracruz. Inland the country changes quickly. Two hours west up Highway 70 the Huasteca Potosina begins around Ciudad Valles, a limestone landscape of blue rivers, sinkholes and the Tamul waterfall, and it is the usual excursion from the city. North and west the coastal plain is flat cattle and sorghum country running to Ciudad Victoria.
