Layout of Nuevo Laredo
Nuevo Laredo sits at about 140 m on flat thorn-scrub country where the Río Bravo swings east, the northernmost city of Tamaulipas and the northernmost point of the state's territory. It is the younger half of a pair. Laredo was founded on the north bank in 1755; when the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo moved the border to the river in 1848, part of the population crossed to the Mexican side and founded Nuevo Laredo, taking their dead with them. The two cities have grown together since, and the river between them is the international boundary along its whole length here — see the rivers map for its course.
The old grid runs south from the river. Avenida Guerrero is the spine: it starts at the foot of Bridge 1, passes the Plaza Hidalgo and the parish church, and carries the shops and pharmacies that day visitors from Texas use. Behind it the customs compound, the freight yards and the bonded warehouses take up a wide belt along the river to the west, and the newer residential colonias spread south and east towards the ring road. Quetzalcóatl International (NLD) lies about 15 km east of the centre on the Piedras Negras road and handles only a short list of domestic flights; the central de autobuses is south of the centre on the Monterrey highway, and long-distance buses leave for Monterrey and Mexico City through the day.

The crossings and the freight corridor
Four road bridges serve the pair of cities. Bridge 1, the Gateway to the Americas, is the downtown crossing used by pedestrians and cars; Bridge 2, the Juárez–Lincoln, takes passenger vehicles straight onto Interstate 35; Bridge 3 is the Solidarity Bridge at Colombia, 40 km upstream, which crosses from a strip of Nuevo León that touches the river; and Bridge 4, the World Trade Bridge, opened in 2000 west of the city and takes commercial trucks only. A rail bridge alongside Bridge 1 carries the line that runs south to Monterrey and beyond. The World Trade Bridge moves more truck freight than any other crossing on the US–Mexico border, and Laredo has in recent years been the busiest land port of entry in the United States measured by the value of goods passing through it.
That traffic is the reason the city exists in its present form. Highway 85D runs south from the bridges to Monterrey in two and a half hours and joins the network that reaches Mexico City, Guadalajara and the Bajío plants; almost everything built for export in north-east Mexico leaves the country here. Customs brokers, warehouses and truck yards occupy more ground than any other single land use, and the queue for the commercial bridge is a permanent feature of the western approaches. Away from the river the country is dry brush, grazed rather than farmed, and the city draws its water directly from the Río Bravo. The 2020 census counted 425,058 people in the municipality, making it the third-largest in Tamaulipas after Reynosa and Matamoros. It is not a resort town and has no beach; the nearest Gulf coast is more than 300 km east. Travellers heading further into northern Mexico normally pass straight through on the way to Monterrey or Saltillo.
