Layout of Coatzacoalcos
The city stands on the west bank where the Río Coatzacoalcos meets the Gulf, so it has a river frontage and a sea frontage at right angles to each other. The centro is the grid behind the river, around Parque Independencia and the municipal palace, and the malecón follows the quay past the ferry landing to the river mouth. Turning the corner, a beachfront boulevard runs north-west along Playa Coatzacoalcos, a wide grey-sand Gulf beach with the newer hotels, apartment blocks and restaurants behind it; the sand continues past Playa Barrillas toward the dunes outside the city. Avenida Ignacio Zaragoza is the main street through the old centre, and the outer districts spread south and west along the highway toward the refinery towns.
The east bank is industry. The Túnel Sumergido, an immersed-tube tunnel of about 1.2 km opened in 2014, drops under the river to Villa Allende and cuts a long detour to the road bridges upstream; Highway 180 crosses there and runs on toward Tabasco. Nanchital sits 15 km up the east bank, Minatitlán and its Pemex refinery 35 km upriver, and Cosoleacaque beyond that. Coatzacoalcos municipality itself contains the Pajaritos, Morelos and Cangrejera petrochemical complexes, which is why a city of 310,698 people at the 2020 census has an industrial footprint out of proportion to it. Minatitlán/Coatzacoalcos International Airport (MTT) is about 30 km south-west; the central de autobuses is on the south side of the centre with ADO services along Highway 180 in both directions. The isthmus, the river and the Olmec country
The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is the narrowest part of Mexico: about 200 km of low ground between the Gulf and the Pacific, with no range above roughly 250 m in the pass. That has made it a proposed shortcut between the oceans since the sixteenth century, and a working one at intervals since the Tehuantepec National Railway opened in 1907 and briefly carried a large share of transpacific freight before the Panama Canal took it in 1914. The current Interoceanic Corridor project has rebuilt the same alignment as the Línea Z railway, upgraded the ports at Coatzacoalcos and Salina Cruz, and laid out industrial parks along it.
The Río Coatzacoalcos rises in the Sierra Atravesada in Oaxaca and runs roughly 325 km north to the Gulf, navigable by seagoing vessels for the last stretch to Minatitlán; it is one of the highest-discharge rivers on the Gulf slope and appears on the rivers map. The plain it crosses is where Olmec civilisation began: San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán, about 60 km south-west, was the first major centre in Mesoamerica, occupied around 1200–900 BC, and colossal heads from it and from nearby sites are now in Mexico City and in the museum at Xalapa — see the archaeological sites map.
